About This Trail

World-class purpose-built mountain bike network in north-east Tasmania, host of the Enduro World Series and considered one of the top MTB destinations on the planet. Blue Derby is a 125+ kilometre network of purpose-built mountain bike trails carved through the rainforest, granite boulders and old mining country surrounding the tiny former tin-mining town of Derby in north-east Tasmania. Built from 2015 onwards by World Trail and funded by the Dorset Council and state tourism investment, the network single-handedly transformed Derby from a near-ghost town into one of the most celebrated mountain biking destinations on Earth, regularly ranked alongside Whistler, Rotorua and Finale Ligure. The terrain is what sets Derby apart. Riders thread through ancient myrtle and sassafras rainforest, drop down granite slabs, traverse fern gullies and pop out onto open ridgelines with views over the Cascade Dam. The dirt is famously hero — a loamy, grippy, deep-brown soil that holds shape in the wet and produces the kind of cornering that has made trails like Atlas, Detonate, Trouty, Krushka's and Air Ya Garn world-famous. The Blue Tier descent, accessed by shuttle, drops 800 vertical metres over 19 km from alpine moorland through giant tree ferns to the valley floor and is widely cited as one of the great backcountry MTB descents anywhere. Derby hosted Enduro World Series rounds in 2017, 2019 and 2022, putting it on the global map. The network spans easy green flow lines suitable for first-timers right through to black-diamond technical descents and double-black gravity tracks like Detonate. Most riders spend three to five days here to sample the full network, and the town has reorganised itself around the trails — bike-wash bays, espresso bars, breweries, shuttle operators and trailhead-adjacent accommodation now occupy what were once empty shopfronts. Shuttles are run by multiple operators (Vertigo, Blue Derby Pods, Derby Shuttles) servicing the upper trails, the Blue Tier and the cross-network rides. Bike hire including high-end full-suspension and e-MTB options is available in town from Blue Derby Cycles and others. Accommodation ranges from architect-designed Blue Derby Pods Ride retreats and Floating Sauna Lake Derby through to pub rooms, cabins, Airbnbs and a campground. The trails are free to ride; donations and trail passes support ongoing maintenance. Derby is best ridden October to May, with summer being peak season. Winter riding is possible but cold and wet at altitude. The town sits roughly 90 minutes drive from Launceston Airport, the standard arrival point. Riders should be prepared for changeable mountain weather, carry a basic spares kit, and respect trail directions — many of the descents are one-way only.

Warnings

Many trails are one-way descents - check signage. Mountain weather changes rapidly. Some trails are advanced/expert only. Mobile coverage is patchy in outer parts of the network.
