L'Etape Australia is the Australian edition of the official Tour de France-licensed L'Etape gran fondo series, held each November or December in the Snowy Mountains based out of Jindabyne, NSW. The Race (Maxi) distance is 157km with around 2,400m of climbing, while shorter Ride (90km) and Express (37km) options cater to recreational riders. The flagship 157km route takes in the Alpine Way, Beloka Range, Perisher Valley and the iconic climb to Charlotte Pass - Australia's highest sealed road at 1,840m.
The course is fully closed to traffic on event day and includes the Beloka climb (the event's signature 5km, 5% ascent), the long descent to Dalgety, and the dramatic climb back into the Kosciuszko alpine zone via Perisher and Smiggin Holes. The final 10km up to Charlotte Pass features sustained 6-7% gradients with views over Lake Crackenback and the Main Range.
L'Etape Australia is the most prestigious gran fondo in the country alongside Bowral Classic and Peaks Challenge, with 2,000+ riders annually and a strong international contingent. The event is run by ASO (the Tour de France organisers).
Gradient profile — Avg gradient: 1.5%, Max gradient: 10%.
