About This Trail
Annual Southern Highlands gran fondo with 160km, 120km and 45km routes from Bowral - Australia's biggest non-elite road cycling event. The Bowral Classic is Australia's largest non-elite road cycling event, attracting over 4,000 riders each October to the historic Southern Highlands town of Bowral, NSW. Run by Bicycling Australia, the event offers Maxi (160km), Challenge (120km) and Social (45km) distance options on a closed-and-marshalled course through the Wingecarribee and Wollondilly shires. The Maxi route is the signature event - 160km with around 2,000m of climbing, taking in Robertson, Kangaroo Valley, Fitzroy Falls and Mittagong before returning to Bowral via Berrima. The Maxi course's defining feature is the Kangaroo Valley descent and climb-out - a 5km, 6% drop into one of NSW's most beautiful valleys followed by an immediate 6km, 6% climb back up to Fitzroy Falls. The remainder of the course is rolling Southern Highlands terrain through dairy country, eucalypt forest and historic villages. Outside event day the Maxi route is rideable but with normal traffic - most local cyclists train on shorter loops out of Bowral, Burradoo and Mittagong.
