About Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park

Australia's largest lake when full, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre sits 15m below sea level and is the lowest natural point on the continent. For most of its existence it is a vast shimmering salt flat, but after rare flooding events (roughly every 8–10 years) it fills with water, triggering an extraordinary explosion of birdlife — pelicans, gulls, and waders arrive in their millions. The lake is deeply sacred to the Arabana people.
