The largest mound spring complex in Australia, Dalhousie Springs are fed by the Great Artesian Basin and maintain a constant temperature of 38–43°C year-round. The springs support endemic fish species found nowhere else on Earth (including the Dalhousie hardyhead), and their mounds and channels form unique ecosystems in the surrounding desert. Swimming is permitted in the main bath spring and is a remarkable experience deep in the outback.

Getting There

Via the Oodnadatta Track from Marree (south) or via Old Andado Track from Alice Springs (north). A 4WD and comprehensive outback preparation is mandatory.

Visitor Tips

  • Camp overnight to experience the springs under the stars. Enter the main swimming spring via the designated entry point — avoid disturbing the mound spring vegetation. Check Oodnadatta Track conditions at William Creek Hotel before departing.
