About Bitter Springs

Bitter Springs is a natural thermal spring feeding a crystal-clear turquoise creek at a constant 34°C, perfect for floating downstream through a corridor of palms and paperbarks. The name is misleading — the water tastes fresh and is one of the most picturesque and relaxing natural swimming spots in Australia. The current is strong enough to float effortlessly for 200 metres before walking back.

Getting There

Map of Bitter Springs

12km east of Mataranka on a sealed road. Mataranka is 420km south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway.

Visitor Tips

  • Bring old shoes — the creek bed is rocky and slippery
  • A pool noodle or float makes the downstream drift much more enjoyable
  • Visit early morning when the light filters through the palms
  • Bring snorkelling gear — tropical fish are visible in the clear water
  • Distinct from Mataranka Thermal Pool — the two are different springs 8km apart
