About Umpherston Sinkhole
A collapsed limestone cave forming a sunken garden, beautifully landscaped with hanging gardens and native plantings descending into a natural circular depression 30m across. At dusk, possums emerge to feed on the hanging plants, creating an unusual and charming wildlife experience in the heart of Mount Gambier. The sinkhole was first gardened in 1886 by local businessman James Umpherston.

Located in the Mount Gambier city centre, easily walkable from the main street. Signposted from Jubilee Highway.
Visitor Tips
- •Visit at sunset — bring bread or fruit to feed the possums (optional — they come regardless). Combine with Blue Lake and Tantanoola Caves for a full day.
