Mrs Macquarie's Chair is a carved sandstone seat perched on a rocky headland in The Domain, offering one of Sydney's most recognised harbour panoramas. The view takes in the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and the sweep of Farm Cove — a prospect that draws photographers, joggers, tourists, and locals in equal measure throughout the day.

Entry is free, and the site is open around the clock, making it easy to work into any Sydney itinerary.

History

The seat was carved into the sandstone outcrop in the 1880s as a memorial viewpoint, and takes its name from Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, who governed New South Wales from 1809 to 1821. According to local tradition, Elizabeth Macquarie would travel to this point to watch for ships arriving through the Heads — though the carved seat itself came later as a formal commemoration of that connection.

The site reflects the colonial-era approach to landscape design in The Domain, where the natural topography of the harbour foreshore was shaped into a public pleasure ground. Today the chair is one of Sydney's enduring heritage landmarks, recognised as much for its historical associations as for the view it frames.

What to See and Do

The main draw is the view itself. From the headland you can look west across Farm Cove to the Opera House and, beyond it, the Harbour Bridge — a composition that has become one of the most photographed in Australia. On a clear day the harbour stretches out in both directions, with ferries crossing back and forth and occasional tall ships or naval vessels adding to the scene.

The chair itself is a modest but photogenic piece of colonial stonework, worn smooth by generations of visitors. It remains a working seat — you can sit in it, and most visitors do.

The surrounding parkland is well suited to a relaxed walk. The Domain connects to the Royal Botanic Garden to the south, so it's straightforward to combine a visit to the chair with a longer stroll through the gardens along the harbour edge.

Private guided tours covering Sydney's highlights — including Mrs Macquarie's Chair — are available if you'd prefer an accompanied exploration of the area.

Getting There and Access

Mrs Macquarie's Chair is located in The Domain, central Sydney, roughly 1.5 kilometres east of Circular Quay. The most straightforward approach is on foot from Circular Quay, a walk of around 10 minutes along the harbour foreshore through the Royal Botanic Garden. Bus routes 302, 303, and 308 serve The Domain if you prefer not to walk.

If you're driving, there is free street parking on Mrs Macquaries Road, though it fills quickly, particularly on weekends and public holidays. The Domain has overflow car parks at Alexandra Park and near the Art Gallery of NSW, both free. There is no dedicated accessible parking at the chair itself; the nearest accessible parking is approximately 150 metres away in The Domain.

The walk to the chair is generally easy, though a few sections are steep. Comfortable shoes are advisable.

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive early morning or late afternoon — the light is better for photography and the crowds are smaller
  • There is limited shade at the lookout, so bring water and sunscreen, particularly in summer
  • Avoid midday in summer if you're sensitive to heat
  • The site is picnic-friendly and BYO is perfectly viable; if you want a café or restaurant, Circular Quay is a 10-minute walk away
  • Street parking on Mrs Macquaries Road fills fast — arrive early or use the Domain car parks

Best Time to Visit

Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) offer the most comfortable temperatures for the walk and the wait. Weekday mornings are noticeably quieter than weekend visits. Summer is busy, and the exposed headland can get hot; if you visit in summer, early morning is the most practical option.
