History & Significance
Cowra Prisoner of War Camp 12 held Japanese and Italian prisoners during World War II. The camp is historically significant for the August 1944 mass breakout by Japanese prisoners, one of the largest escapes from an Allied POW camp. The site now functions as a museum and memorial honouring those who died and the complex history of wartime detention in Australia.
