History & Significance
The QLD-NT border was established through colonial federation in 1901. The border demarcates the boundary between two distinct Australian regions with different governance and development patterns. Various crossing routes have served pastoral, mining, and overland travellers for over a century
Getting There
Located on the QLD-NT border. Access depends on which crossing: Dajarra crossing is roughly 1,400 km northwest of Brisbane via outback tracks; Borroloola crossing is accessible from Mt Isa region. Roads are remote and often unsealed—4WD recommended in wet season
Parking
No formal parking at the border itself. Roadside parking available at some rest areas and stations nearby, but facilities are minimal to non-existent in this remote region
Visitor Tips
- •This is a state border crossing, not a tourist attraction — no facilities or designated stop
- •If you need to stop, use rest areas before or after the border
- •Carry sufficient fuel, water, and supplies for remote driving
- •Check road conditions on major crossings (Dajarra, Borroloola routes) before travelling
