About Chillagoe Caves

The Chillagoe Caves are a series of limestone karst caves containing remarkable stalactites, stalagmites, and cave coral formations, set amid the remote Outback fringe landscape of the Atherton Tableland. The caves also contain significant Aboriginal rock art and the surrounding Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park features dramatic limestone towers, remnant smelter ruins from the area's historic copper mining era, and abundant wildlife. Three caves — Donna, Trezkinn, and Royal Arch — are open for guided tours.

History & Significance

The Chillagoe Caves are a limestone karst system in the Atherton Tableland region, significant for both geological formations and Aboriginal cultural heritage spanning thousands of years. The area became prominent during the late 1800s copper mining boom, with the Chillagoe-Mungana mines operating from 1887 to 1920, leaving behind smelter ruins that remain visible today. The caves themselves preserve stalactites, stalagmites, and cave coral alongside Aboriginal rock art, reflecting continuous Indigenous connection to the landscape.
