History & Significance

Tacking Point Lighthouse was established in 1879 to guide ships along the NSW coast. Built on a rocky headland, it remains an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse has become a local icon and popular tourist stop for its dramatic coastal location and panoramic views.

Getting There

Located at Tacking Point near Port Macquarie, NSW. Drive via Pacific Highway to Port Macquarie, then follow signs to Tacking Point Reserve. About 2.5 hours north of Sydney.

Parking

Free parking available at Tacking Point Reserve carpark. Limited spaces (approximately 30–40 bays), fills quickly on weekends and holidays. Accessible parking available. Overflow parking may be found on nearby streets.

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive early morning or late afternoon for best light and fewer crowds
  • Bring water and sun protection—there's minimal shade at the lighthouse
  • The walk to the lighthouse is relatively easy but involves some stairs
  • Great spot for photography, especially at sunrise or sunset
  • Check weather before visiting—exposed headland location can be windy
