History & Significance

Mount Twynam is the third-highest peak in the Australian Alps at 2196m. It sits within Kosciuszko National Park and is a popular summit for hikers tackling the Main Range. The peak offers significant photography opportunities due to its elevated position and panoramic alpine vistas.

Getting There

Located in Kosciuszko National Park near Thredbo Village, NSW. Access via Thredbo Alpine Village (about 120km south of Canberra). Drive to Rawson Pass carpark; walking track begins here. No public transport to the trailhead.

Parking

Free parking at Rawson Pass carpark. Capacity around 40-50 spaces; fills quickly on weekends and holidays. Overflow parking available at Thredbo Valley carpark (requires short shuttle or walk). Accessible parking available near main facilities.

Visitor Tips

  • Start early to avoid afternoon clouds obscuring views
  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection—exposed ridge walking
  • Wear sturdy hiking boots; terrain is rocky and can be slippery when wet
  • Best photography in clear conditions; check weather before committing
  • Allow 4-5 hours for the return walk from Rawson Pass carpark
