About Sky Tower
At 328 metres, the Sky Tower is Auckland's most iconic landmark and one of the tallest freestanding structures in the Southern Hemisphere. Features observation decks at 186m and 220m with 360-degree views across the city, harbour, and volcanic field. Adrenaline seekers can SkyWalk around the outside or SkyJump 192m to the ground.
Completed in 1997, the Sky Tower rises 328 metres above central Auckland and remains the defining feature of the city's skyline. For nearly three decades it has served as both a telecommunications hub and New Zealand's most visited paid attraction, drawing visitors for panoramic views, fine dining, and two of the more unusual adrenaline activities available in any city centre.
What to See and Do
The main observation deck sits at 186 metres, offering 360-degree views through floor-to-ceiling glass. On clear days you can see up to 80 kilometres in every direction — across the Hauraki Gulf, over the Waitākere Ranges, and south to the peaks of the Coromandel Peninsula. The 53 volcanoes of the Auckland Volcanic Field are visible below, a reminder that the city is built on one of the world's youngest and most active volcanic fields.
The SkyDeck at 220 metres is the highest public viewing point, featuring panels of glass flooring. Looking straight down through 220 metres of air to the street below is not for the faint-hearted, but the views are noticeably better than the lower deck.
For those after more than a view, the SkyWalk takes you outside the tower on a 1.2-metre-wide walkway at 192 metres — no handrail on the outside edge, just a harness. The SkyJump is a base-jump-style descent from the same height, reaching speeds of 85km/h on the 11-second fall. Both require advance booking and have age and fitness requirements.
The tower also houses Orbit, a revolving restaurant at 190 metres, and The Sugar Club, a fine dining restaurant by Peter Gordon. Both offer a meal with a view, though prices match the altitude.
Getting There and Access
The Sky Tower is at the corner of Victoria Street West and Federal Street in central Auckland. It is a five-minute walk from Britomart Transport Centre and accessible by all major bus routes. Several paid car parks operate within 100 metres (typically NZ-5 per hour). Street parking is limited.
The tower is fully wheelchair accessible via lifts to all observation levels.
Visitor Tips
Book tickets online to skip the queue, especially during school holidays and summer weekends. Early morning (9-10am) and late afternoon (after 5pm) are the best times for both light and crowd levels. Winter often delivers the clearest views, as Auckland's summer haze can reduce visibility.
Allow 1-2 hours for the observation decks. Add 30-45 minutes each for SkyWalk or SkyJump. The SkyWalk requires ages 11+ and reasonable fitness. The SkyJump requires ages 10+ (under 16 needs a guardian), weight between 40-136kg, and general medical fitness.
Best Time to Visit
Open daily 9am to 10pm. Clear winter days offer the best long-range visibility. Summer evenings provide dramatic sunset light across the harbour. Auckland's weather can change quickly — if the top is in cloud when you arrive, consider coming back later in the day.
General admission is NZ for adults and NZ for children (6-14). Children under 6 are free. SkyWalk and SkyJump are charged separately.
Getting There
Located in central Auckland CBD at Victoria Street West. Free shuttle from Britomart Station (5 mins walk). Accessible by car via Link Drive or Mayoral Drive; multiple paid car parks nearby.
Parking
Multiple paid car parks within 100m: Aotea Centre, Federal Street, Civic car parks (typically $3-5/hour). Street parking available but limited. Ground-level access and lift access are wheelchair accessible.
