About Auckland War Memorial Museum
One of New Zealand's most important museums, set in a neoclassical building in the Auckland Domain. Houses the country's most comprehensive collection of Maori and Pacific Island taonga, an extensive natural history collection, and poignant war memorial galleries. The Maori Court features a stunning carved meeting house and a 25-metre war canoe.
Auckland War Memorial Museum — known by its Māori name Tāmaki Paenga Hira — is one of New Zealand's most important cultural institutions, set in a commanding neoclassical building at the highest point of the Auckland Domain. Since opening in 1852 as the country's first public museum, it has grown into a world-class repository of Māori and Pacific taonga, natural history, and military heritage.
The building itself is a war memorial. Completed in 1929, its design pays homage to New Zealand servicemen and women, and the upper galleries are dedicated to Aotearoa's military history from the New Zealand Wars through to modern peacekeeping. The architecture is striking from any angle, with the grand neoclassical portico framing views across the Domain to the Waitematā Harbour.
What to See and Do
The Māori Court is the centrepiece of the museum and should be your first stop. The carved meeting house (wharenui) and the 25-metre war canoe Te Toki-a-Tapiri are among the finest examples of Māori carving and craftsmanship on public display anywhere. Daily cultural performances include a pōwhiri (welcome) and haka — these run at set times, so check the schedule on arrival.
The natural history galleries cover New Zealand's unique geology, from its volcanic origins to the present-day Auckland Volcanic Field. An interactive display shows the 53 volcanoes within the city boundary — a surprise to many visitors. The wildlife galleries feature extinct species including the moa, alongside current native fauna.
The Pacific collection is one of the most comprehensive in the world, reflecting Auckland's status as the largest Polynesian city. Artefacts from across Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia fill dedicated galleries.
Getting There and Access
The museum sits in the Auckland Domain, inner-city Auckland. It is an easy walk from the CBD or a short bus ride from Britomart Station. On-site car parking is available and free, though spaces fill during school holidays and weekends. The building is fully wheelchair accessible.
Visitor Tips
Weekday mornings between 10am and noon are the quietest times to visit. Allow at least two hours, though half a day is more realistic if you want to see the major galleries and catch a cultural performance. Photography is permitted in most areas. The on-site café offers good lunch options, and the gift shop stocks quality New Zealand-made souvenirs.
Auckland residents receive free general admission. Other New Zealand residents enter by donation. International visitors pay NZ (adult) and NZ (child 5-15), though prices may vary while some galleries are being refreshed.
Best Time to Visit
Open daily 10am to 5pm. Any time of year works, but avoid school holidays if you prefer a quieter experience. The museum is a particularly good option on rainy days — Auckland gets plenty of those.
