History of Barron Gorge and Barron Falls
Barron Gorge forms part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, one of Australia's most ancient rainforest ecosystems. The gorge became a major tourist destination following the opening of the Kuranda Scenic Railway in 1891, which was engineered to navigate the steep terrain. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway was added in 1995, providing an aerial perspective of the canopy and falls. Barron Falls itself is a significant natural feature, with flow dramatically varying between wet and dry seasons.
Tips for visiting Barron Gorge and Barron Falls
Combine the Skyrail up and Scenic Railway down (or vice versa) for the most complete experience. The Rainforest Discovery Centre in Kuranda has interpretive displays about the World Heritage rainforest. Visit in the wet season for the most dramatic waterfall display.
