About Dunkeld & the Grampians

Dunkeld sits at the base of the Grampians, one of Victoria's most distinctive mountain ranges. The town is a launching point for serious walkers and touring campers, with trails ranging from accessible riverside walks to challenging summit routes. The surrounding landscape is defined by quartzite peaks, deep valleys, and native bushland.

Walks & Trails

The Salt Creek Walk starts right here in town, offering an easy introduction to the area's natural features. For a longer day walk, the Dunkeld to Mount Sturgeon Discovery Trail heads into the ranges. Intermediate walkers can tackle Mt Abrupt Walking Track, Signal Peak Track, or The Piccaninny Walk, all within 7km. The multi-day Grampians Peaks Trail offers a more ambitious experience through the heart of the range.

Camping

Dunkeld Caravan Park is on the town boundary, ideal for caravans and camper trailers. For backcountry camping, Mt Sturgeon Rest Area and Grampians Retreat are close by. Hike-in options include Mud-Dadjug Hike-in Campground and Djardji-djawara Hike-in Campground. Freshwater Lake Campground offers free camping further into the ranges.

Golf

Grampians Golf Club is 6km away and provides an 18-hole course with views across the surrounding landscape.
