Baw Baw National Park - St. Gwinear Visitor Area

Thomson, Victoria

About Thomson & Baw Baw National Park

Baw Baw National Park's St. Gwinear Visitor Area sits on the edge of Victoria's alpine plateau, where mountain ash forests and open grasslands create a rugged backcountry setting. This is serious walking country—a network of well-established trails crosses ridges and valleys, making it a base for multi-day treks and day walks into some of the state's most remote terrain.

Walks & Trails

The visitor area is surrounded by a comprehensive trail network. Village Trail (East), Summit Trail, and Upper Tyers Trail are within 5km, while longer routes like McMillans Trail, La Trobe Trail, and Maltese Trail extend into the wider park. Link Trail, Tanjil Link Trail, Home Run, Tanked Bypass, and Mueller's Trail connect sections and offer varied terrain for all experience levels.

Camping

Multiple campsites support extended visits and through-walks. Baw Baw Plateau Walking Camp, Rock Shelter, and Baw Baw Alpine Camp are closest to the visitor area. Mountain Ash Gully Free Camp, Snowgum Ridge Campsite, and Saint Phillack Saddle offer options further along trails, while Baw Baw Ridge Camping Area, Aberfeldy River Campground, Plane Track Bush Camp, and Mountain Creek Flat Campsite provide base options for caravan and camper trailer access.

Attractions & Things to See

Aberfeldy River flows through the region and is accessible within 13km, offering river walking and scenic values. For those venturing further, Ada River and regional landmarks provide exploration opportunities beyond the park.

Pubs & Dining

The Alpine Hotel is the closest dining option at 6km, offering a resupply point for provisions. Erica Hotel and Rawson Stockyard are within 19km for post-walk meals and refreshment.
