About This Trail
4.7km Adelaide Hills classic from Magill to Norton Summit - the city's go-to lunchtime climb with 280m of vertical gain. Norton Summit is the Adelaide cycling community's reference climb - a 4.7km ascent from Magill at the edge of the city to the historic Norton Summit village at 460m. The climb gains 280m of vertical at an average of 5.9%, with consistent gradients between 5-8% and only one brief easing near the Tower Hotel switchback. From the foot of the climb to the top the road follows the original 19th-century coach route up the Mount Lofty Range escarpment, with wide views back over the Adelaide Plains and Gulf St Vincent on the way up. Norton Summit is famously well-paved with a generous shoulder for most of the climb, making it a safe option for regular training. It's the most-ridden Strava segment in South Australia and forms the warm-up for nearly every Adelaide Hills loop. Strong riders climb it in 12-14 minutes; recreational riders typically take 18-25 minutes. From the top, riders can extend in many directions: south to the Three Springs and Greenhill Loop, east toward Lobethal and the Barossa, or north along the ridge toward Mt Lofty Summit. The Scenic Hotel and Norton Summit Bakery sit at the top and are traditional rest stops. Gradient profile — Avg gradient: 5.9%, Max gradient: 9%.
