About Alligator Gorge (Mount Remarkable National Park)
Alligator Gorge is the centrepiece of Mount Remarkable National Park in the southern Flinders Ranges, a narrow slot canyon with quartzite walls rising 40m and eroded into distinctive 'rings' and steps by millions of years of water flow. The gorge contains several permanent waterholes and is surrounded by some of the best-preserved native scrub in the southern ranges. It is named not for reptiles but for the alligator-skin texture of the rock walls.
