History & Significance

Ruby Gap gained its name in the 1880s when a gemstone discovery sparked a mining rush, though the stones proved to be garnets rather than rubies. The remote gorge where the Hale River cuts through brilliant red quartzite remains one of the most isolated destinations in the MacDonnell Ranges, accessible only by 4WD track.
