History & Significance

Devils Marbles are a sacred site to the Warumungu and Kaytetye Aboriginal peoples, with significant Dreaming stories associated with the formations. The distinctive granite boulders were formed by natural weathering and erosion over millions of years. The site has been managed as a protected natural landmark and is part of the larger Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve.

Visitor Tips

  • Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat and get better light for photos
  • Bring plenty of water — there's no shade and the red rocks absorb intense heat
  • Wear sturdy walking shoes; rocks are uneven and can be slippery
  • The main loop walk takes 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Stay on marked tracks to protect fragile spinifex grass and respect the site's cultural significance
