Mount Feathertop

Located in the Australian Alps near the Victoria–NSW border. Access via Gungargena Road near Tawonga South (closest town), approximately 3.5 hours from Melbourne or 4 hours from Canberra. 2WD vehicle recommended for the main access road; high-clearance or 4WD may be needed in winter.

Mount Feathertop is the second-highest peak in the Australian Alps at 1,922 metres. It is a significant landmark for bushwalkers and photographers in the Gungargena Range, popular since the early 20th century as a mountain touring destination.

Start early to avoid afternoon clouds obscuring summit views
Bring plenty of water and sun protection — exposed ridge with minimal shade
Wear sturdy hiking boots; terrain is rocky and can be slippery when wet
Check weather before heading up; conditions change rapidly at elevation
Allow 4–5 hours return trip depending on fitness level
