About Horizontal Falls

The Horizontal Falls are a remarkable tidal phenomenon in Talbot Bay on the Kimberley coast, where the massive tidal range of the Kimberley forces billions of litres of seawater through two narrow gaps in the McLarty Ranges, creating horizontal rushing waterfalls on each tidal change. The seaward gap is approximately 20 metres wide and the inner gap 10 metres, generating powerful racing currents. David Attenborough described them as one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

History & Significance

Horizontal Falls is a natural tidal phenomenon in Talbot Bay, Kimberley, created by the region's massive tidal range—among the largest in the world—forcing billions of litres of seawater through narrow gaps in the McLarty Ranges. The site gained international recognition when David Attenborough described it as one of the world's greatest natural wonders. It remains one of Australia's most remarkable geological features and a significant drawcard for adventure tourism in remote Western Australia.
