About Painted Desert
A vast landscape of eroded sandstone hills in bands of terracotta, purple, white, and ochre north of Coober Pedy, the Painted Desert is one of outback South Australia's most visually arresting natural features. The colours result from different mineral compositions in ancient sedimentary layers. The landscape is best seen at dawn and dusk when low-angle light intensifies the colour contrasts.
