History & Significance

Mount Tomaree is a significant local landmark in the Port Stephens region. The summit offers panoramic views across Port Stephens, Shoal Bay, and the Tasman Sea. The area has long held importance for the Worimi Aboriginal people and remains culturally significant.

Getting There

Located at Shoal Bay, Port Stephens area, approximately 30km from Newcastle. Drive via Stockton or via the Pacific Highway to Raymond Terrace, then follow signs to Shoal Bay. Well-signposted from the village.

Parking

Free parking available at Shoal Bay carpark near the mountain base. Ample spaces but can fill on busy weekends; arrive early during peak season. Accessible parking available near the trailhead.

Visitor Tips

  • Start early to beat crowds and heat, especially on weekends
  • Wear sturdy walking shoes — the track has rocky sections
  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection; limited shade on the summit
  • Best light for photography is early morning or late afternoon
  • Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour return trip from carpark
