History & Significance

Mount Feathertop is the second-highest peak in the Australian Alps at 1,922 metres. It is a significant landmark for bushwalkers and photographers in the Gungargena Range, popular since the early 20th century as a mountain touring destination.

Getting There

Map of Mount Feathertop

Located in the Australian Alps near the Victoria–NSW border. Access via Gungargena Road near Tawonga South (closest town), approximately 3.5 hours from Melbourne or 4 hours from Canberra. 2WD vehicle recommended for the main access road; high-clearance or 4WD may be needed in winter.

Parking

Limited parking at Gungargena Road trailhead (approximately 6–8 spaces). Free parking. No facilities at carpark; arrive early as spaces fill on weekends. No accessible parking modifications noted.

Visitor Tips

  • Start early to avoid afternoon clouds obscuring summit views
  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection — exposed ridge with minimal shade
  • Wear sturdy hiking boots; terrain is rocky and can be slippery when wet
  • Check weather before heading up; conditions change rapidly at elevation
  • Allow 4–5 hours return trip depending on fitness level
