About Hobbiton Movie Set

The real film set used for the Shire in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Set on a private sheep farm near Matamata, the fully intact set features 44 hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, the Party Tree, and the rolling green hills of the Shire. All tours are guided and include a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn.

The Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata is one of New Zealand's most recognisable visitor attractions — and unlike many film locations, this one is entirely intact. Built on a private sheep farm in the Waikato, the set used in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies remains a working film location you can walk through, guided by staff who know the stories and the set inside out.

This isn't a recreation or a themed experience built for tourism. It's the actual set, on the actual hillside, with 44 hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and the Party Tree still standing as they appeared on screen.

What to See and Do

All visits are guided, which suits the scale and detail of the site well. Tours move through the full set at a pace that gives you time to look around, take photos, and ask questions. The route covers roughly two kilometres of farm terrain — grass paths and gravel tracks across rolling hills — so comfortable shoes are worth wearing.

The highlights most visitors spend time at include Bag End (Bilbo and Frodo's home), the Green Dragon Inn, the Party Tree, and the hobbit holes themselves, which vary in scale due to the forced perspective techniques used during filming. At the end of the tour, every visitor receives a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn — typically an ale or a lemonade — which is a satisfying way to finish the walk.

There's a café and gift shop at the visitor centre for anything additional, though you can't bring your own food and beverages onto the site.

History

The set was first constructed on the farm in 1998, built specifically for The Lord of the Rings trilogy (released between 2001 and 2003). Rather than being demolished after production wrapped, it was preserved — an unusual decision that paid off when public interest in visiting proved significant. The site reopened to visitors in 2012, the same year The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released, and was used again as a filming location for The Hobbit trilogy (2012–2014).

The farm itself remains privately owned and is still a working sheep property — something that adds to the distinctly rural New Zealand character of the landscape.

Getting There and Access

Hobbiton is located near Matamata in the Waikato, approximately two hours south of Auckland. From Matamata town centre, follow State Highway 1 south and turn onto Buckland Road; the farm entrance is clearly signposted from there.

There is no public transport to the site, so a car is essential. Parking is free with ample capacity, and accessible parking is available near the visitor centre. During peak season — particularly December and January — the car park can fill by mid-morning, so arriving early is worthwhile on both counts.

Visitor Tips

  • Book online in advance. Tours sell out during peak season, sometimes weeks ahead. Don't leave this to the day.
  • Choose a morning slot. The 9am and 10am tours are consistently quieter and offer better light for photography than afternoon sessions.
  • Wear sturdy, comfortable footwear. The terrain involves two or more kilometres of grass and gravel across uneven hillside. Sandals or dress shoes aren't practical.
  • Bring a jacket. The hillside is exposed, and even in summer the wind can be notable. Shade is limited across the set, so sun protection is worth considering too.
  • Allow more time if you're invested in the films. The suggested visit duration is two to three hours, but fans of the series often spend longer.

Best Time to Visit

September through to April offers the most reliable weather for an outdoor walking tour. The landscape is at its greenest through spring and early summer (September to December), which suits both the experience and photography.

Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends, and morning tours consistently attract smaller groups. If you have flexibility in your schedule, a Tuesday or Wednesday morning in October or November is about as good as conditions get.

Entry is $89 for adults, $45 for children, and free for children under five. The complimentary drink at the Green Dragon is included in that price.
