About YHA Australia

YHA Australia (Youth Hostels Association) is the country's largest backpacker hostel network and a member of Hostelling International. The network has run hostels in Australia since the 1930s and has consolidated over the past decade to focus on flagship locations in capital cities, iconic regional spots, and natural-environment destinations.

The current network covers every state — flagship metropolitan hostels (Sydney Harbour, Melbourne Central, Brisbane City, Adelaide Central, Hobart Central, Fremantle), beach and surf locations (Byron Bay, Cape Byron, Apollo Bay, Coolangatta), alpine retreats (Thredbo), and ecotourism-certified eco hostels (Grampians Eco YHA, Pittwater Eco YHA, Cape Byron, Thredbo).

YHA Membership

YHA membership is optional but offers ~10% off nightly rates plus partner discounts (food, tours, transport). Non-members can book at full rates without joining. Membership can be purchased at check-in or online via yha.com.au/membership.

Working Holiday Visa Travellers

YHAs are popular bases for Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417/462) backpackers between regional work placements. While YHA hostels are not dedicated working hostels for the 88-day farm work requirement, many travellers stay at YHAs in regional centres before/after farm jobs. For dedicated working hostels, see the main hostel directory.
