History & Significance

Trial Bay Gaol was established in 1886 as a minimum-security prison on the NSW mid-north coast. The gaol was built to house prisoners who worked on constructing the breakwater for the Trial Bay harbour. During World War I, it was converted to an internment camp for German and Austrian prisoners. The site was abandoned in 1903 and remains as atmospheric ruins today.
