About Waitomo Glowworm Caves

A world-famous cave system illuminated by thousands of Arachnocampa luminosa glowworms — a species found only in New Zealand. Visitors glide silently by boat through the Glowworm Grotto, where the cave ceiling sparkles like a starry sky. The caves also feature impressive limestone formations including stalactites, stalagmites, and the 18-metre-high Cathedral chamber.

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves sit roughly two hours south of Auckland in the Waikato region, and they offer one of the more singular natural experiences available in New Zealand. The caves are home to thousands of Arachnocampa luminosa — a bioluminescent glowworm found nowhere else in the world — and the centrepiece of any visit is a silent boat ride beneath a cave ceiling that glitters with their blue-green light.

The cave system also features well-developed limestone formations, including the Cathedral chamber, which rises 15 metres and has impressive acoustics to match its scale. Whether you're drawn by geology, biology, or simply the spectacle, the Waitomo Caves have plenty to justify the journey.

What to See and Do

The guided tour takes you through a series of chambers before culminating in the Glowworm Grotto, where you board a flat-bottomed boat for a quiet passage through the cave's inner reaches. Your guide pulls the boat hand-over-hand along a rope in silence, allowing everyone to settle into the darkness and let their eyes adjust. Above you, thousands of glowworms illuminate the ceiling in clusters — the effect is genuinely striking, and no camera flash will do it justice (more on that below).

Before the boat ride, the tour passes through the Cathedral chamber, notable for its height and its stalactites, stalagmites, and other limestone formations built up over millennia. The full guided cave experience runs around 45 minutes, though visitors interested in the wider Waitomo area can spend considerably longer — up to three hours — if they combine the standard tour with additional activities.

For those after something more active, black water rafting and abseiling are also on offer. Black water rafting involves floating through underground passages on rubber tubes, and it's a very different experience from the standard tour — worth looking into if you're keen to see the caves from a more physical perspective.

History

Māori have known the Waitomo Caves for centuries, using them as refuge and for travel through the landscape. European exploration of the system began in the 1880s, and by 1889 the glowworm cave had been opened to tourists, making it one of New Zealand's earliest commercial natural attractions.

The boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto was established specifically to allow silent passage — noise and vibration can disturb the Arachnocampa luminosa glowworms, which spin sticky silk threads to catch prey attracted to their light. Keeping the experience quiet has always been as much about protecting the ecosystem as it has been about the visitor experience.

Getting There and Access

Waitomo village is located about two hours south of Auckland, reached via State Highway 1 and then SH 39. From Hamilton, the drive north takes approximately 2.5 hours. Regular bus services connect the Waitomo area to major North Island centres, and local shuttle services operate from Waitomo i-SITE if you're arriving without a car.

On-site parking is free, with good capacity for both cars and campervans. Accessible parking is available close to the visitor entrance, with overflow parking in the village during busy periods.

Visitor Tips

A few things worth knowing before you go:

  • Book in advance. During school holidays and summer (particularly December to January), tour times fill up. Booking online ahead of time saves you from missing out on your preferred slot.
  • Arrive early. Give yourself 15–20 minutes before your scheduled tour to sort entry procedures without feeling rushed.
  • Leave the camera flash off. In the Glowworm Grotto, flash photography is not permitted — it disturbs the glowworms and the conditions mean flash shots won't work well anyway. Let your eyes adjust and experience it as it is.
  • Wear good shoes. Cave floors are damp in places and can be slippery. Comfortable footwear with decent grip is the sensible choice.
  • Consider the little ones. The caves are suitable for all ages, but children under five may find the dark environment unsettling. It's worth checking with the operator about minimum age recommendations for the boat tour before bringing very young children.

Best Time to Visit

The caves operate year-round, daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm. If you'd prefer a quieter experience, the early morning session (9:00am–10:00am) or the late afternoon (4:00pm–5:00pm) tend to see fewer school groups and tour buses. The peak summer school holiday period from December through January and the Easter long weekend bring the largest crowds — if your schedule has flexibility, visiting outside those windows makes for a more relaxed day.

Entry is $55 for adults and $25 for children.

Facilities

The on-site visitor centre has lockers, toilets, and a café serving light meals, snacks, and hot drinks. A gift shop is also available. Picnic areas can be found in Waitomo village and in the surrounding reserves if you'd prefer to bring your own food.

Nearby Attractions

Waitomo has more to offer beyond the glowworm caves themselves. Ruakuri Scenic Reserve is close by and worth combining into a full day in the area. The surrounding Waikato countryside is pleasant for those who want to stretch the visit further.
